Robby married Kristin, his high school sweetheart, in 2008 and currently resides in Beavercreek, Ohio. They have 2 adopted children and one biological child, with a rotating door of foster kids who need a temporary pit stop in life. They have a couple dogs, a cat, and recently started beekeeping. He is a member of Sovereign Grace Church in Bellbrook, several local service and professional organizations, a Leadership Dayton 2019 alum, Army veteran, Wright State and Cochise graduate, and a lifelong Dayton resident. His hobbies include playing Minecraft with his kids, listening to books/podcasts, and dreaming.
I started my company in March of 2019 because I worked part-time for another paint company in the area and realized a market that was under-served that needed a special touch: cabinet refinishing. The previous company was more of a general, all-purpose painting company and I found myself doing cabinet work for them which I realized I enjoyed doing. However, after joining a couple of painting and refinishing communities online, I learned that we were doing a pretty lackluster job out of youthful ignorance and that there was a legitimate opportunity to build a business on proper, professional refinishing. So I left and started JSP and have been practicing and learning every day since – something I expect will continue until I die.
At Johnson Specialty Painters, we love that intelligence and creativity can – and should – both be utilized in what is typically perceived as a “trade that you fall in to because you can’t do anything else.” We use so much math and science on every project: considering environmental variables, airflow, temperature, humidity, material viscosity, catalyst ratios, area/volume measurements, production rates, and lighting to name a few. We write reports, tutorials, estimates, procedures, testing logs, and evaluations. We use principles that we’ve learned over time on how to most effectively interact with people, customers and employees alike.
We get to create truly unique, custom pieces of work for customers who become friends. Additionally, we can transform the space people call home into something they love and will spend some of the best days of their life in. Perhaps most importantly, we’ve been able to start creating a place where the extremely gifted individuals who work with us can learn new ways to express themselves artistically and to be proud of the work they do with their hands, while learning a valuable skill to support their families.
We are most unique in that we are refinishers who also happen to paint, rather than painters who also happen to do cabinets. We train in the process and products of our specialization instead of trying to be a jack of all trades. Our craftspeople are truly creatives who like to make new things and make people happy rather than to simply punch their card and earn a wage. We’re different in that we are the best – we’re not the fastest and we’re not the least expensive. As such, we’re not for everyone, but we do know some great people in the area who meet different needs than we are equipped to meet. We use only the finest paints available for the projects we encounter, imported from Italy and Holland. We are thankful for local relationships with big name stores, but are not bound to them, using a variety of companies for the select products they lead the market in for specific applications.
